john 4.20.jpg

“Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”” (John 4:16–20, ESV)

What an embarrassing and awkward moment. Jesus transitions the conversation in a way that must have been both surprising and difficult for this Samaritan woman. No wanting to give full disclosure to this stranger, she just tells Jesus that she does not have a husband. It must have been terribly painful when Jesus revealed all of her failed marriages and the illegitimate relationship that she was currently involved in. This woman is so caught off guard by Jesus' comments that she declares him to be a prophet. This is a bold statement for there had been no prophet for about four hundred years. It becomes apparent in the following statement that she has no desire in any conversation concerning her past relationship failures as she moves back toward the division that existed between the Jews and Samaritans asking about the places of worship.

We must guard ourselves against the temptation to ignore our union with Christ when it comes to our sin or hide behind theological issues to avoid confrontation. Nothing is hidden from Jesus, and we do not have to run and hide from him, but we need to understand that when we sin, we sin against him first. Jesus is prophet, priest, and king and therefore has the authority to declare judgment, mediate sin on your behalf, and the right to command your obedience. Our advocate mediates the new covenant and is always faithful. When called to repentance, listen to what Jesus says in his word and be willing to submit to others that hold you accountable for your idolatry. The main things are the plain things so don't get lost in small arguments or deflect the conversation of those that confront you in your sin. Walk humbly in grace and receive correction.
